Kitchen & Bathroom Cabinet Color Trends for 2022

Last year we saw a significant shift in paint and stain color trends. Kitchen & bathroom cabinet color trends for 2022 continue to grow and change based on those trends.

Green-blue grays were the hottest new color in 2021. With cool grayed blues being a new neutral. Cool blues with grey undertones are still on-trend for 2022, in calm, cool tones, both light, and dark. However, nature-based yellows with gray undertones will overtake blue cabinets and will dominate this year.

In 2021, we saw cool grays interchanged with warm gray or “greige.” This trend continues for 2022.

Stained Cabinets Make a Comeback

If you love the look of stained cabinets, you will be excited to learn that stained wood cabinets are a significant trend continuing forward into 2022. Coffee-colored stains replace honey wood shades from latte to expresso. The coffee tones move towards darker charred wood finishes and even more rustic driftwood.

Deep bronze/brown exchanges the stark black cabinets of last year

Kitchen & Bathroom Cabinet Color Trends for 2022 Embrace Green

White cabinets are still popular, but the use of warmer whites, soft beige, or green will soften and contrast against pure bright white.

Green kitchen cabinet shades can range from mint, through sage, to deep foliage green. Linking us to nature, green can be a soothing tone, whatever variety you choose.

One of the reasons for their popularity is that green-painted cabinets are forgiving of marks and grime so they cut cleaning time.

Also, it is a malleable color that works in a contemporary or farmhouse kitchen and is also an excellent choice for laundry rooms.

If you desire a more nature-inspired kitchen, incorporate a mix of driftwood or reclaimed wood.

If you have a small kitchen and would like it to feel more extensive select a lighter take on green. Deep tones can make a space feel very sophisticated

Note: Avoid cool greens in north-facing rooms.

We spoke with Jared Caruso, President of Caruso Kitchens, our favorite kitchen showroom, to discover if he is finding that people are being more adventurous and asking for colored cabinets.

We specifically asked about the color green as they selected this for their stunning new kitchen display shown in the showroom (image above).  It features Wynnbrooke Cabinetry in a Sherwin Williams custom green paint in the Summit Door Style. The Island and hood are from Eclipse Cabinetry which features the shallow shaker door in white oak. How exciting for us designers to be able to use any of the Sherwin Williams paints with the Wynnbrooke cabinets to create the perfect color palette.

Jared shared “We are seeing that for sure. Most of what we see in kitchens is some shade of green. But a lot of blues, blacks, and even some purple. A lot of requests for purple lately.”

The request for purple is likely because Patone has selected PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri as their color of the year. Interested in what the top paint companies have picked for their color of the year?
