2023 Color of the Year: The Power of Color

The power of Color is indisputable, and the transformative abilities of paint are unlimited. Each Color has a specific meaning linked to it. Considering the stress, we have felt over the last several years I was expecting bright cheery colors – not so. However, I was not surprised that Pantone and paint companies selected warmer tones for their 2023 Color of the Year, which are mood-boosting yet,  grounding, and calming.

2023 Color of the Year:  Predictions by Pantone

The Pantone Color Institute studies color trends throughout the year to decide on the following year’s Color. They consider all aspects of culture: fashion, marketing, social media, technology, and politics.

Last year Pantone selected selected “Very Peri” as its 2022 Color of Year, a tone they defined as having a “courageous presence [that] encourages personal inventiveness and creativity.” This year they are lightening things up and have selected “Digital Lavender,” a lighter, more restful tone, as Pantone’s 2023 choice. Its sensorial quality is calm and optimistic, which makes it ideal for self-care rituals, healing practices, and wellness products.

2023 Color of the Year: Predictions by Sherwin-Willians

Sherwin-Willians have also lightened and warmed up their color prediction for 2023. They have selected a grounding, earthy shade with subtle pink undertones. These color tones channel comfort and coziness. “People have been drawn to nature-inspired and earthy tones the past couple of years, and this is something that will continue into 2023 and beyond,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

We wanted the 2023 Color of the Year to reflect what we’ve been seeing in terms of neutrals warming up,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Homeowners opt for warmer whites, beiges, pinks, and browns. Redend Point SW 9081 is an earthy color, and its subtle pink undertones exude a feeling of warmth and exploration—something people want to feel in their homes. It also leans into the macro trends around empathy and care culture. While self-care is vital, care is also about looking out for each other and our communities.”

Behr too is warming things up with their pick for 2023. Blank Canvas is a warm, timeless, tranquil, welcoming white with glossy tones. You will notice in the photo above, provided by Behr, that the “Gratifying Grey” they have paired “Blank Canvas” with also has warmer tones than in previous years.

As we look to 2023, we understand that comfort will still be a driving force behind design decisions and style statements,” said Erika Woelfel, vice president of Color and Creative Services at Behr Paint Company, in the press release. “Blank Canvas effortlessly offers a clean and inviting blank slate that allows individuality and creativity to flow freely.”

2023 Predictions by Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore’s 2023 Color of the Year was my biggest surprise. They have selected a warm blush tone called Raspberry Blush, similar to Sherwin-Williams; Redend Point. However, their supporting color selections are very bold and make a dramatic statement. Benjamin Moore’s selection committee felt the time has come for energetic and uplifting colors.
